Emblem Meaning
The Panama National Emblem was opened in 1904 and is a shield emblem. There are five parts. The upper left corner is the sword and the rifle, and the upper right corner is the shovel and the pickaxe. The central pattern represents the strategic position of Panama connecting North and South America, facing the Pacific and Atlantic. The lower left is the corner of abundance, and the lower right is the flywheel representing progress. Above the shield is a horned eagle (national bird), and the ribbon in its mouth is written with the national motto, Latin 'for the benefit of the world.' There are nine golden five-pointed stars above the eagle, representing the nine local provinces. There are four national flag decorations on both sides.
