Suriname is the smallest country in South America in terms of area and population, and is the only South American country in the Western Hemisphere that does not belong to the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The capital is Para. Maribo is a commercial port at the mouth of the Suriname River. Suriname is an extremely diverse country in terms of race, language, and religion. The Muslim population accounts for 13% of Suriname, and its proportion is the highest among all American countries.
