Introduction
The Cooperative Republic of Guyana, commonly known as Guyana, is located in the northern part of South America and is the only country in South America whose official language is English It is also a member of the Commonwealth. It borders Suriname to the east, Brazil to the south, Venezuela to the west, and the Atlantic Ocean to the north. Guyana has a border dispute with Suriname and Venezuela. In particular, Venezuela has repeatedly claimed the land west of the Essequibo River-Western Guiana ( It accounts for about two-thirds of Guyana's area) belongs to Venezuela. Although Guyana is located in South America and is a member of the Association of South American Nations, it has traditionally and historically been closely related to the Caribbean islands.
